10 Tips on Home Recycling Bins

1. Depending on your specific situation, you may need any number of recycling bin set ups to satisfy your needs. Do your recyclables need to be separated? Which materials are accepted?

2. Commonly, dual stream recycling is what most people end up doing. This means separating recyclables into two groups, paper and everything else.

3. Single stream use is becoming more common, however. Many cities are going this route, which makes recycling easier and increases the likelihood that people will get on board.

4. Often, families who are vigilant about recycling find it is much easier to color code wastebaskets around the house. You don't need them everywhere, but a few carefully placed "mini-recycling centers" makes the job much easier.

5. Curbside recycling is offered to about half the population of the US. If you are one of those without this option, organize your community together to help take recyclables to a nearby collection center.

6. Recycling centers for your home come in a variety of styles. Some employ two or three bins that fit into corner cabinets or in slide out drawers like regular trash bins.

7. In order to truly prepare your home for recycling, you need to inform yourself in addition to simply purchasing bins. Find out what exactly can be recycled and when pick-up times are.

8. Once you start recycling, you'll be more aware of what products use the most waste and be better prepared to reduce your consumption of wasteful products.

9. You'll also begin to notice what things among your recyclables you can use without even recycling. Old jars for storage or crafts, for example.

10. And never underestimate the importance of simply talking to your family about the new regime. It can be simple and seamless, but everyone has to be made aware and reminded from time to time at first.
